Independence Lakes are a series of remote lakes situated at the top of Cache Peak, 10 miles from the City of Elba. The first mile of this 3.1 mile trail is a bit rocky, but the remainder is very reasonable walking with several switchbacks to the first lake. Fishing is best at the lower lake and you may be lucky to reel in Montana Greyling, California golden Trout or Cutthroat Trout. Camping at the lakes is limited because of the rocky terrain and downed timber; however, there is a well-maintained campsite at the trailhead.
