Curves is an international franchise with about 10,000 locations in 70 countries. Sue Newkirk opened the Burley Curves 10 years ago and currently has 5 employees. Curves is designed for women to promote better overall health through fitness and weight management. It is recommended to be active in the 30 minute circuit program 3 times per week, every other day, for strength training and cardiovascular conditioning. The weight management classes are currently free. Membership specials are available: March 8-31, 2010 is the 12th annual international Curves Food Drive and women can bring groceries to the center in exchange for $0 membership fee. In addition, wellness programs are offered through insurance companies including Medicare supplements such as Humana/Silver Sneakers. Membership is portable and transferable. This year's theme is "Together we can make the world one million women stronger." Rewards and incentives are given in appreciation of Curves members' participation. Curves is very community minded: food drives locally have collected 1,500 – 2,000 pounds of food each year, Turkey Gobble collected 22 turkeys in November donating to the Women's Shelter, Helping Hands and South Central Community Action Partnership. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Curves is active in Relay for Life and currently has a fundraiser for the Curves Haiti Relief Fund to which Curves International has donated over $200,000 to date. Club hours are 5:45am – 1:30pm and 3pm – 7pm, Monday – Friday and 8am – 11am on Saturday.
